Build your own Bar Pin Eliminators

Making maximum height upper rear Bar Pin Eliminators for Jeep Cherokees

I needed maximum height on the rear upper shock mounts on my Cherokee to accommodate the long travel Rancho RS 9010 rear shocks that I had chosen, but I also wanted to eliminate the bar pins and gain some bushing compression. Without going to a really custom mount extended into the interior of the Jeep or changing the angle of the shock to mount them further towards the center of the Jeep, the stock mounts will give all the height that there is to be had. I looked at commercially available BPE's and found that the JKS units mount the shock pretty close to the original position. I also noticed that one could gain a little height over the JKS units by mounting the shock pin offset in the blocks almost up to the mounting flange. So, I went about designing and building my own BPE's. I used 1 ¼" solid bar stock for the mounting blocks and trimmed them to the right shape with a portable band saw and an angle grinder. Holes were drilled for the 5/8" mounting pin and then other holes were drilled for the mounting bolts. I used 3/8" stainless bolts and drilled and tapped the mounting holes in the Jeeps body to match. I also used two washers inside the blocks to compress the shock bushing. As you can see, these worked out well. However, I did break one mounting nut off of the body while tapping it, so I snaked a washer and nut into the recess and used a small box end wrench to hold things in place while the bolts were tightened down.
