I went wheeling

Not sure how to get pics up

Chinaman Gulch in Buena Vista, Colorado. 6-8 on the scale and had some pretty cool obstacles. We didn’t touch carnage canyon, only the RZR had a winch.

Enjoy!

I was actually just thinking the other day about how, now that I live halfway across the country already, it wouldn't be that bad a drive to go out to Colorado and do some of the mountain trails with my truck. Not necessarily the more extreme rides that the guys with the buggies do but maybe get to meet up with them. Probably a few years before I'll have the vacation time to do it, already have a few trips scheduled next year (Jamaica!) but should get it on the bucket list...

I think you should start turning that Cherokee into a crawler. Get some tons and start fabbing stuff. :)

My friend Paul’s Taco is a very capable crawler. It has a trail gear front housing and a 4 cylinder so it’s super light and usually shows up the higher dollar rigs and makes me wish I would have started with a pickup of some sort.

Dof and Boob, any time! Let’s go wheelin! :chug:

Looks like fun!

I'll get my schit back together and we can go hit some stuff a little more challenging (but not too too crazy for ya :D).

Until you get tired of high centering on everything, bob the bed, and wish you had started out with something shorter

Funny story from this weekend, I brought the girl wheeling and we were going up the trail and I asked her if she was scared yet. She told me she wasn’t and I told her that I have now had this Jeep on much tougher trails.

Just as I said,“this thing won’t break today” the steering wheel lost feeling and I could no longer steer. It ended up being the factory steering shaft coupling came off the shaft because it just wasn’t tight. I busted out the tools and had it fixed back up in 20 minutes but it was hilarious how I had to put my foot in my mouth.

The only girl I saw was in the driver's seat :p

Nice, I did that trail back in '00 w/ my XJ, with the guys from Tomken, haven't been back there since, only driven through.

Good to see you out with it pretty regularly now, wish I could do the same. I did drive the JK to work today, so I'll count that as use

Hoofmann 06-28-2018 08:43 AM

I know, I’m still a little apprehensive on the trail because of wanting to get home. It’s built pretty stout now so I can afford to hammer down, I just don’t have the confidence in it yet. I’ll get there.

6DoF 06-28-2018 11:15 AM

this is why the TJ ... road trip out there, wheel some ****, and road trip home. would be a great vacation

Let's plan on an Indy trip in couple-a-few months. Should have the buggy up by then. We could make it an all day ordeal and camp overnight as well if desired.

The trail makes me fukkin nervous. That said, let’s do it!

I can understand that feeling, but it's going to be one of the harder trails to shake down on, that if something happens its short, camp/parking/tow rigs are just a short walk, etc.

I'd like to do it forwards, backwards, and everything in between

nblehm 06-28-2018 10:52 PM

Evan indy will be no problem for your jeep.

Hoofmann 06-29-2018 09:28 AM

Nate, what’s up? You going to build another crawler or what?

Short answer yes. When I dont know. May just try and unload the Camaro and buy something. My motivation for car projects is starting to lack. I have a whole rig built in my head. Just if I want to do the work

Hoofmann 07-10-2018 10:29 PM

I’m headed to spring creek on Saturday morning. I’ll be running it with a guy I know but haven’t been wheeling with yet. He has a YJ and it’s more built than mine; trailer queen.

I’d like to extend the invite, I have an open seat. It’d be trailhead at 9:00am so we’d leave Denver a little after 8:00.

We are headed out of town Sunday or I'd take you up on that. Have fun.

That’s cool but I’m going wheeling on Saturday! :D

i'm actually going out this weekend too, trying out a new place in WV. cross your fingers the ol' girl holds together for me!

Hoofmann 07-16-2018 09:34 AM

Saturday was a good day. Beautiful weather and not too hot once we got on the trail, since spring creek provides some shade. My buddy Greg and Travis were there and we were joined by two other rigs, people Greg knew, both stock wheelbase wranglers on 37s, one YJ and one TJ. I didn’t get any pics of them.

Beautiful drive up:

Greg has a tricked out YJ. It features a 6.0l drivetrain, dana 60s, and shocks that have been fully tuned for some go-fast action on the trail. We traded rigs for a short time and I got bit. I want an LS drivetrain in mine.

My buddy Travis in his 22re powered 4Runner. This rig just flat works!

Also, unfortunately, I put a hole in the sidewall of my tire. I was at 15 psi and clipped a rock just right and put a hole in it. Swapped the spare on and I was back in business but it’s disappointing.

I want to go wheeling so bad. I miss it.

JEEPJERK 07-17-2018 06:10 PM

I ripped an old MTR sidewall. Stuck 17 plugs in it and drove it for another year. Lol

Bill Moore Lake this weekend. I snapped one pic at the top.

I am making plans to hit up the Independence trail system in Penrose this Sunday. This is one of the harder trails in CO, rated a 10.

Not sure on extra seat yet, it may be taken. I’m going to take lots of pics because the last time I ran this trail, I destroyed my Dana 30 and didn’t make it to the exit to even give it a shot.

nblehm 08-02-2018 10:00 AM

I am getting driveshafts made hopefully this week. Then I need to wheel.

Damn, I really want to run Indy too :(

I WILL hit it again this year, and Carnage

Some of my friends and I are planning another trip out to Moab over Labor Day. I recommend anyone meet us out there for some shenanigans. I am going to be tearing down my steering after this weekend to add hydro assist before then. :D

Hmmmm...a month from today.

Crap, not likely to happen since I'm taking the 28th through the 1st off to go to Seattle. Not sure turning around and leaving again would go so well with work.

Started stripping the D60 last night.

Hoofmann 08-06-2018 08:15 AM

Yesterday was an epic day of wheeling. Me and two of my buddies with 4Runners On 40” tires ran the trail with no real breakage to speak of. This trail kicked my ass, I was drug thru many of the sections of this trail. We got on the trail at 10:30 and made it off around 4:30. There was literally nobody else but us on the trail, so that was nice.

Every section of this trail is an obstacle, ready to swallow up tires and hang you up. I came here when I was on my d30/8.8 axles and broke three axle shafts and a ball joint in the front end. I had to rebuild the front axle on the trail and drive it off. This time, I drove it home without issue!

Dude, you're unstoppable now, you're like an every weekend wheeler now :p

Hoofmann 08-06-2018 02:44 PM

I’m so happy to have my Jeep back operational again. Not only that, but it’s built the way I have always wanted it (okay, it’s not done yet) so that I can do trails like this, beat on it, and drive home.
