well.. there's just a single bolt that holds each valve cover on. then 5 for the intake. the turbo housing is tricky bc it has the worlds largest snap ring holding it together.

hahah.. jk. i know what you meant. i wish i had some sort of camera in it so see what happened when. but either way, it was catastrophic

way back when PapaBear was still a 4cyl, the first craigslist engine i swapped in came apart like that. no reason, just going to work, 70mph (>3000r's b/c auto) and it decided to make new windows in the block. $5 says the previous owner hydro-locked it, bent a rod, and decided while running was the perfect time to sell it. who knows what that engine had been thru before you.

well.. it had definitely been apart before. at least the connecting rod caps. had 1-6 punch marks in it. so.. chances are new bearings and not retorqued correctly. but dang on if it didn't run like a champ right until it let loose.

What year engine is this again? Are you planning much in the way of performance upgrades during the rebuild, or will it be mostly stock components?

'96. 215 hp ppump (from a 5 speed).
90hp injectors (already installed when purchased)
ground fuel plate
4K GSK
60# intake and exhaust springs
timing bumped
balanced and bore matched rotating assembly
new oil pump.

that's about it. just shooing for a solid, reliable, easy cranking and good power motor. maybe 3-350 hp?

i think it's doable. and won't need any more than that with 4.56s under the truck. i wand it to do 70, but also chug along down a path with ease.

your engine builder is kinda slow, you should smack him across the face and tell him i said that.

he just finished up final exams, competitive pulling and heavy equiptment repair. i'll cut him some slack for now. i'm hoping it'll be done this weekend.

mine may have been built, blown up and rebuilt before we get a running vid of the 55..

The pistons have cup holders!? lol

Are you expecting to be able to tow with this, and how big of a trailer/much weight would you think?
Everything I can find online only talks about wheelbase of tow rig compared to length of trailer, not weight...
Debating doing something similar with mine, if I can tow Kong with it (7000# on trailer), otherwise, might stick with gas V8 (maybe another 6.0L so both Jeeps can share parts).

i'd see NO reason you couldn't tow 7k with one of these with a V8 or the 5.9, should go down the road smooth. i mean the Porsche Cayenne is rated for 7700lbs towing!

if you feel you can safely get the weight up to speed and stop it, that's probably more of a limiting factory then length. any moderate load on a chit setup can be unsafe. plus, can you put a gooseneck ball in the back to help even more?

well.. i towed my XJ with my first gen cummins. 2+ hrs away. and that's a 3 speed auto w/o lockup or OD it did just fine. and i'd bet that the wheel bases are within 3" of being the same. engine placement is nearly identical. transmission is only 5" longer (OD) and the tcase is the same. 1 ton axles basically match (14 bolt in the back of the kaiser instead of dana 70) so for all intents and purposes, it seems like the same truck.

the hope is to be able to pull my moms CJ to the beach so it's not sucking fuel and wandering all over the highway driving it down there. (another issue i'm going to have to address.. maybe just a new steering box? recommendations?)

there will eventually be a 5th wheel hitch in the bed, but for now the concentration is on getting it road worthy and bumpers built.

i want to put a winch on the front and have the 9500# smittybilt from my XJ.. but don't want to spend $1k+ on a 12-15k # unit. i know rhe truck weighs less than 9500.. but if it's ever stuck it won't be. then again.. it's not a mudder or crawler.. the winch will most likely be used to recover smaller vehicles (if at all) and pulling logs from their house. thoughts?

i've seen the steering box on a CJ get tight spots that make it wonder a bit ... but there's always alignment and ball joints to go thru too.

I'm debating trying to build it into a streetable tow rig and what not, or just keep it as a fun around town toy... I need to figure out wheel spacers to convert to standard 8 lug, get custom wheels, or swap axles before my current tires wear out, and I have a cheap lead on a set of Rockwells, whcih means I'd need like a 46" tire to soak up the gearing... No matter what I want to go to an NV4500 and probably 205, but debating on the engine.
And my trailer is bumper pull, so it shall stay like that, but the brakes on the trailer are good.

what debate is there on the engine?? hahah. swapping the axles aren't a major deal. esp if you can snag a mid 90s DSD f350 axle. if i remember correctly they have the same spring perch width as the current front spring setup so it would simplify it.

i didn't realize you had a kaiser though.. pics??

yes sir. so far i'm incredibly pleased with the way it's turning out.

i guess that's what happens when you tear something completely down to metal and individual pieces before painting and reassembly. hahah. i just hope it runs as good as it looks. shooting for 300ish hp and 500 or so ft lbs. nothing to where a stock 47rh can't handle. but enough to know a difference.

i think they're a lot like 4L60s and 5.3/5.7L motors. there are thousands upon thousands that work flawlessly for longer than intended and under constant abuse, but then there are some lemons that don't make it 100K miles before bookoos of issues. and we can all find 'issues' ppl have had with any auto with a quick google machine search. i mean there's a fuy on another forum with a 1st gen with 400k plus miles that he has a semi built 46RH that the motor blows antifreeze out the head gasket over 40PSI doing boosted 4wd launches and runs 12s in a quarter. and been doing that for 100K+ miles. if it comes to it.. we'll build it. but not until then. i'm tired of working on it. i want to drive it some. hahah.

TL/DR: sh!t happens to some but not a vast majority.. i just hope i'm in the vast majority for this one

crossing my fingers for ya sir! it's also a really easy swap later, nothing like what you are undergoing now.
