How do I put shims on the upper mounts to raise the hatch? I've got clearance issues with my bumper.

Remove your headliner, unbolt the hinges, insert shims, bolt on hinges, replace headliner. Have fun.

take it off and put a gator net on the back... easy tailgate fix, and your rearend will sit higher with the less weight

Where exactly do the shims go? Inside or outside?

The hings mounts to the roof. Under the headliner is where the bolts come out. If I lift the hatch a bit I should be able to get the shim between the hinge and the roof.

Miggy rules!

you only have to remove the small metal liner that goes all the way across the rear.
Once removed, you'll see the nuts ( )
