are they, I'm pretty sure they are.
Would a 4.0 harness from a 1996 swap directly into my 2.5 98 XJ w/o any major re-wiring? If I used a 1996 gauge cluster/dash would the harness go directly in my XJ?

yes, but have you ever tried to swap out dash wiring and clusters? they're radically different from 96 to 97.
96 was a changeover ******* "let's get rid of all these old parts we won't use anymore" kinda year.

nope never tried before. My current dash is ghey anyways, just a MPH and a fuel gauge.
The bottom line here is, I want a 4.0 in my XJ's engine bay, and I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to make it happen.

all 4.0h's after 91 are HO....
why would the put a less powerful motor in a 98 than a 96. they should all be 180-190 and 2xx ft-lb's....
