Rusty’s Off-Road’s Airtube and K&N cone air filter

Installation date: 8/25/99

Rusty’s aitrube and K&N kit is designed to replace restrictive the factory airbox and flat paper filter with a high-flow reusable K&N cone filter. Installation is easy and should only take about 10-15 minutes. The airtube will work on all Jeeps with the 4.0L and 2.5L engines, just make sure you specify what year and engine you have when ordering (the 4.0L and 2.5L tubes are different).

To install the kit, first, remove the breather hose(s) attached to the lid of the airbox. Next, take off the top of the airbox like you were going to change the filter. Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the clamp holding the airbox lid to the end of the rubber intake hose. Now you can completely remove the lid of the airbox and set it aside. Next remove the two bolts and one nut in the base of the airbox. Now just pull out the airbox. Slide Rusty’s airtube into the end of the rubber intake hose. Place the airtube brace over the stud that held the airbox down and tighten down the nut (see center photo below). Now put the breather hose(s) on, you may need to trim the ends a bit for a good fit. Finally put the K&N airfilter on the end of the airtube and tighten the clamps on the filter and the rubber intake hose. That’s it.

The filter I’m using with the kit is an optional larger filter from Rusty which costs $42, compared to the $30 for the regular-sized filter. The p/n for the larger filter is RE-0910. The only difference in the sizes is the length of the filters, the larger filter looks to be a little less than twice as long as the regular filter. The airtube itself costs $19.95 for the 4.0L engine and $29.95 for the 2.5L engine.

Right away you should notice a better sound to your engine – it’s a bit of a “whooshing” sound from the intake – and improved throttle response, especially with the larger filter.

So far I’ve been really happy with the kit. Adding a second battery with the large filter isn’t possible, but Rusty told me that you can fit a second battery with the regular filter and that he should have a dual batter kit out soon. Turbo City claims power gains of 7-13hp with their Rock-It Tube kit, and I figure if those numbers are correct, then Rusty’s kit is good for atleast that much or more. Seat-of-the-pants-feeling tells me the power is up, but I have no numbers to back that with.
