So freerider pointed this out to me yesterday morning and we bought it.

So what it needs.....most likely just a head, its an 0331 head, and it got overheated, and then the problems started. Id bet the block is fine. So the plan for now is to grab a junkyard 0331 TUPY head, rebuild it, put that in, remove the grandpa steps, find some alloy wheels for it, general clean up, and then list it on bring a trailer.

Super clean. The hardest part of this Jeep will be finding sharp looking stock alloys and new tires.

A set of Grizzlys or Canyons with 30x9.5 BFG ATs or Good/year Duratracs, white letters out, will look perfect.

I’m looking at options for some stock alloys and good tires. 30x9.50 is a possibility, but they can also rub on stock. 235/75/15 wont rub.
I’m thinking this one will end up being a bring a trailer one.
Too bad it’s not flame red.

Pulled a used 2004 WJ 0331 TUPY head at the junkyard yesterday. Got the head cleaned up, valves lapped, and the high temp primer on. Head was real real clean inside, amazingly so. I would not have hesitated to run it as is, but I wanted to be able to say it has a rebuilt 0331 TUPY head to maximize the value.

If so the rest of the oil looked the same. Took a bit of work to get it rinsed out of the pan. I just changed the oil on the MJ, so I captured that and refilled the engine with my dirty oil as a first purge. We cranked the engine untill we got some oil pressure and saw oil coming up to the rockers. We drained that out, and saw more white sludge coming out after that cranking. Refilled with fresh oil and filter and out it back together. We took it for a test drive last night.....and it runs. Need some more drive time to make sure the issue is solved.

Not as bad as that, but sure was cloudy, and remained separated from other regular used oil when we filled a washer fluid jug with used oil

Ok so nearing the home stretch on this. Took the seats out, cleaned them up, rebuilt some foam on the drivers seat. The seat was in very good shape and the vinyl had previously been replaced, but a little bit of the foam was squished enough that the fabric was loose.
Cleaned carpets, painted the end caps and side trim. Replaced the rear wiper switch and got the rear wiper working. Replaced the front fog lights with new ones. Repainted the front bumper, misc cleanup and touchup, painted roof rack. Got another set of wheels on craigslist which overall was a little nicer, buffed those up and will be taking them to costco tomorrow to get some new Michelins mounted.
Still planned are front and rear diff service, and trans flush, transfer case fluid change also.

What kind of tools do I need to take the covers off xj seats
I jave seat heaters for ours I have never got around to installing. Just hog rings and pliers? Any tips? My drivera sdie seat cushion has the normal wear from sliding in and out.
Sir Sam
01-02-2021, 03:35 PM
No special tools. I don’t use hog rings but I do use small zip ties and flush cutters.
Take seat out 3x13 mm bolt 1x18mm nut. Drivers side has seat belt sensor plug.
Remove plastic trim 3x Phillips.
Unbolt upper section, 2 x 13mm on recline lever side. 1x13mm on trans tunnel side or T40. Keep plastic spacer between seat parts on the bolt. You’ll see what I mean, don’t lose it.
Flip base upside down and remove plastic groove holder from front, inside and carpet. Two fir tree style release clips on vinyl side.
Use pliers to twist and break hog rings.
Upper portion is easy since you don’t need to pull cover off just open at the bottom and slide the heater up.
fawk ... if that wasn't white, i might have been flying out to get myself a new winter ride.

Rebuilt seat cushion:
https://colorado4wheel.com/images/grandpa_jeep/content/images/large/IMG_1057.jpg
Changed all fluids today, I dont think the diffs had ever been done before, front looked like used motor oil, the rear looked brand new.
Trans fluid was really dark, like motor oil, but transfer case had only some tint to it.
I'm going to do front brakes tomorrow, then front wheels go on for good. We have had a vinegar flush filling the cooling system since at one point it was badly rusted, to the point the heater core was totally block with rust scale. We have blown it out and rinsed but having that acid sit in there will eat up the rust scale remaining. Time to purge it out now.

Blue XJ
01-05-2021, 09:45 AM
There are non left around here that aren't rotted out, so it's tough to say, and finding a stock one is even harder. The last few that I have seen that were fairly clean, and just needed rockers were around $4k, but they were lifted with 33's and had the normal offroad goodies on them. One even had a fairly new Golen stroker motor with a D44 swapped in up front for about that same price too.
Sir Sam
01-05-2021, 11:20 AM
Clean and stock is hard to find. Combine in lower miles and its harder to find.
This one came from PA and NY so it does have some surface rust, but nothing cancerous. That’s the one thing it has working against it.
From what I’ve seen of recent around here, I think I can get 6-8k for it.
Cobound
01-05-2021, 06:32 PM
Yeah, one just starting to rust will go $4-5k easily, especially w/ under 170k on it. No rust at all, $6-8k.
Clean, no rust starting, 130k easily $7-10k. Now, that's asking, but I do know you're not going to buy one for under $6-7k...having looked hard all over the place for them, they are priced high and sell fast!! How fast, listed and sold in hours sometimes...definitely in days.
It's insane. That one I posted above for $14k only has 50k miles and looks super clean - but I've been to that dealer and their last XJ was sketchy as hell, even as clean as it was, had tons of red flags, this one is likely the same...it's been listed for a couple weeks and no idea if it's sold cuz it's a dealer and I'm not calling, cuz I ain't interested
freerider15
01-06-2021, 11:52 AM
I understand the love for XJ's myself (obviously), but it gets to a point where I hope they'd be spending that money since they have a bit lying around, rather than looking at what that kind of money can buy you. Love my XJ's (mostly) but $8-14k can buy you something a hell of a lot nicer for a DD
Doesn't help I'm tired of working on vehicles to some extent. Nikki's Jeep was getting a little warm so replaced radiator, water pump (again), tstat (again), hoses (again), and the fan clutch.
It's got ~192k on it now, and I'll likely be DD'ing it soon enough.
I'd say Sam's should be able to pull $8k on BAT. For what I see going for $5k easily, I think a super clean, lower mileage specimen should be able to fetch that.

Yes, I agree it will do well on BAT. Those that brought really good money were lower miles. that one that sold for $3100 was super clean, oddball color, but had over 200k. I think I would have been able to get more on CL here in CO for that gold one.
That being said mine is a little higher miles at 138k, but its in very good shape, so I think it will do well.
Cobound
01-08-2021, 02:53 PM
Higher miles  Not at that age...even for BAT. Ours has 121k on it right now, and it's not a BAT worthy one...but I could probably spend a weekend or two and get it up to a good position to price it to make a few bucks. But I'm just hoping it lasts through his high school years and it's the only one I buy...unless I find a super sweet deal for myself some day :p

Ok bring a trailer came back and said they would list it with no reserve. I explained I knew I could get my reserve price locally and in a few weeks so I had to insist on the reserve. they said "fair enough, we accept"
so its been accepted, now we wait for one of their auction peoples to review and write the ad, then i get to approve or offer feedback, and then it gets listed, so it seems like its still a few weeks from being listed potentially.

Haha ya, the other one was the one that was lifted we took wheeling in Moab. It probably could have done well on BAT, but the body had a few imperfections in it, if I could have gotten lucky on some white junkyard parts it would have looked better, and then might have been BAT material.
I'm not sure this would bring 10k on BAT. BAT seems to be crazy for the odometer reading, stripped down oddball not very desirable XJs to me, but with low miles, bring crazy money.
This is a desirable Jeep for me, since its a good looking sport, but the miles are probably high enough to keep the price from going crazy. I suspect it will be in the 7-8k range on BAT. Regardless of the price whoever gets it will be getting a very solid Jeep, and actually because of the higher miles it will be a better value than the low miles ones that IMO people overpay for.

Sir Sam
01-27-2021, 05:25 PM
Ya I think basically no one has bothered with it until this week. They seem to wait untill they have enough vehicles to list as once for extra traffic. Lookup the sales history of Cherokees on BAT they go in groups. Lay group was end of dec to early Jan. So we are close to that same cycle.
And ya I could have likely sold it locally by now, but maybe not for as much. It’s ok, it’s just been sitting in my dads garage out of the way staying clean. We need to toss the new battery in, and change some fluids called out in prepurchase inspection.
Expecting it to be listed within a week, I’m also expecting to see some others go live around the same time.
if nothing else, it's a fun try-it. learn the process n expectations for next time.
Sir Sam
01-27-2021, 09:51 PM
Ya I read up about selling on BAT I saw where people talked about having to negotiate their reserve. And where they had to wait to for the auction to go live, even wait to hear back if it was accepted.
But I hadn’t really figured out how they group things untill after it was submitted. Mostly I just watch the defenders sell to keep an eye on the market and what will be a good seller for mine, help keep my vision by seeing what the market likes. And there are enough defenders it’s an almost constant stream of them, but with other vehicles it’s not so often and they group them together.
Realistically I could have submitted it now and I would likely get listed about the same time as when I submitted a few weeks ago.
Sir Sam
01-28-2021, 08:35 PM
Ok they got the listing drafted today, I reviewed and had some edits, and uploaded a couple more photos. We will see how quick they get back with any edits, but we could be going live soon!

Ya prices always go up near the end, flurry of bidding early on. Stagnation. And then flurry near the end.
That’s good for me, it’s in a strong position and it’s about two days from end of bidding. I suspect Friday will be very interesting.

And ya, I’m the only XJ for sale now. Odd how that works.

Also the current high bidder has thrown some high bids on nice jeeps in the past. Their bid history is interesting.

No. Not won the vehicle, but they’ve also bid more on some older cherokees than my bid is at now.

Guy is in the florida keys, hes getting shipping quotes but is also considering flying out and driving it back.
Its up to us to arrange payment, likely end up with a wire transfer for payment.

Just catching up on emails from my return from the desert, haven't been on :jeepin: or elsewhere much since...saw the BAT email say the auction ended so I peeked, wow, nice sale.
Great profit...dude, very nicely done!!
Congrats! Assuming since the big D is over, this was your buy and your sale? Or did you work a deal w/ the old man again...thinking you might be in the market for another flip soon if they can go like this

My dad paid for it, titled and registered it, and he is the one receiving the funds from the sale.
Now that I’m single any future purchases I make won’t be subject to divorce stuff. Trust me if I could buy flips this nice I’d fix and sell them on BAT all day long. Finding good flips is hard, hence why I’m looking at importing rare vehicles to resell on BAT.

Gotcha...I wondered. Nice you're old man was able to be there for ya, I'm sure the projects helped w/ the mind.
Now you got your land to look for, and I'm confident you'll find some flips soon as well.
Good luck,

Any idea what he paid for the shipper? That seems like it would be pretty pricey

I do not know, but I also saw right after this BAT gives you the option to price out a shipper when the auction is live.

My buddy has had a few vehicles shipped in from out west, it's normally about $1200. I just figured going to the keys is about as far as you can go, so it's probably more.

Yup, they paid by wire transfer. I have a flip ready to start on, but I'm going to try and knock out some work on the land rover that needs to be done, just general maintenance if I want to keep using it.
Then I'll be on to a blue 00 XJ with 100k that needs some bodywork.
